So you’ve got the kids hanging around on any given Sunday, and your stuck for something to do that’s not going to cost you a fortune. You can’t spend every weekend going to Disneyland, or Hawaii, or NYC. You need to save a little scrilla now and again, don’t you? Of course you do, so take that extra scrilla and place it on Grandpa’s Truss to win, place or show in the first.
What AM I talking about? Why I’m talking about Dollar Sundays at Golden Gate Fields, baby!
During Live Racing season, Golden Gate Fields Dollar Sundays offer:
$1 entry fee
$1 hot dogs
$1 ice cream
How awesome is that? Why just think of all the extra money you’ll have to bet on the ponies? Well, that is if you actually have extra money. On a recent visit with buddy KC and our boys, I had to be content to simply watch the pretty ponies, while enjoying a couple of $1 beers and dogs of course. OK, I did place a couple of bets, but born loser that I am I was true to form that day. Seriously, I don’t say that with any sort of self-pity, I’ve always just been unlucky when it comes to any form of gambling.
But don’t let my natural born tendencies discourage you from going out and enjoying yourself. For those of you with little to no experience when it comes to playing the ponies, there are betting windows for beginners. They’ll explain the ins and outs and help you to get the most out of your GGF experience. The website even has a down-loadable beginners guide. If you want to spend a little more money you can check out The Club House or the Turf Club. Let’s face it, the grandstand is where the great unwashed masses tend to gather, but as I’m as unwashed as the next guy I had not problem with it. Go out, enjoy the sunshine, the ponies, the smell of the track, and your fellow degenerate gamblers thrill seekers. And if $1.00 hot dogs are not up to your high standards, GGF offers six different restaurants for your finer dining pleasure.
I dropped a line to the folks at GGF looking for a little more information on Dollar Sundays. I had incorrectly assumed that Dollar Days was some sort of summer promotional offering. Turns out they offer Dollar Sundays whenever there is “live racing.” Marketing Coordinator, Dan Cirimele, was kind enough to respond:
“Dollar Sundays are every Sunday during live racing at Golden Gate Fields. Live racing will return to GGF on August 25. Our schedule is set for August 25 – October 3. Then we’ll take a short break and live racing will return on October 20 – December 19.”
So you’ve got until August 25 to squirrel away a few extra beans to back Grandpa’s Truss. Until then I’ll see you on the beaches in Maui. That or the local community pool.
